Frequently Asked Questions:

WHEN SHOULD I PLANT?

In this area we can pretty much plant year-round. The main limiting factors are frozen ground or extreme mid-summer heat. Be sure to keep all new plantings moist: don't let the root ball dry out.

WHAT SHOULD I PLANT WITH?

Our soils are very deficient in organic matter and nutrients. You should always add the proper soil amendment when planting your trees and shrubs. When used as a 50/50 mix with your native soil, the proper amendments will help ensure success.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I WATER?

There is no easy answer to that question. Clay type soils drain very poorly, and care must be taken not to over water. Sandy soils drain quickly, and plants in these soils may need deeper and more frequent watering. Either way, do not let the root ball of your newly-planted tree or shrub dry out totally.

SHOULD I FERTILIZE WHEN I PLANT?

A starter fertilizer low in nitrogen, along with B-1 root stimulant and mycorrhizae should always be incorporated with your new planting. These items will ensure your plant gets over transplant shock quicker, and create a good foundation for a healthy plant.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I FERTILIZE?

Trees, shrubs and turf should be fertilized at least 3 to 4 times a year. Use a winterizer in late fall to help prepare your plants for the winter, a general purpose in the spring to help get growth started, and at least one other feeding during the growing season.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY PLANTS IN THE WINTER?

Plants need a supply of water, even during the winter dormant months. If we have a dry winter with little snow, you should deep water all your trees and shrubs every 4-5 weeks. This will lessen the stress your plants are under, and prepare them for a strong spring push.
